Introduction to Cosmic

In an era where sustainability and innovation are becoming increasingly critical, Cosmic is leading the charge with its groundbreaking solar-powered home or accessory dwelling unit (ADU). Based in San Francisco, Cosmic was founded by Sasha Jokic, an entrepreneur and architect with over 14 years of experience in design and construction. Jokic’s previous ventures, including Formdwell — a startup developing intelligent robotics for construction — showcase his commitment to transforming how we build and live. Cosmic aims to solve the housing and climate crises with their all-electric, zero-emissions home, marking a bold new step in sustainable living.

Cosmic’s ADU, which sounds pretty cool, stands out because of its name, sustainable features, and pioneering construction process. For the sake of this article, we will focus solely on the 380sq ft Studio offering, but there are two additional options, the one-bedroom and two-bedroom future choices.

Each is designed to be a solar-powered unit that can generate more electricity than it consumes, making it a beacon of energy efficiency.

The Cosmic ADU intends to create enough excess energy to charge an electric vehicle or redistribute it to the main home. Think of it as a solar battery for the good of the primary household. You can stay with the included half-covered solar roof or upgrade to the entire solar roof for even more energy capture.

Each ADU’s sleek design integrates cutting-edge technology to ensure it remains entirely zero-emissions. It’s built with eco-friendly materials and designed to function seamlessly as a supplementary living space or a standalone home. Are you looking for a recreational room or a separate office? The Studio may be the abode of choice.

Impact on Housing and Climate Crisis

The potential of Cosmic’s ADU extends beyond reducing carbon footprints; it offers a viable solution to the ongoing housing crisis. With urban areas facing severe housing shortages, these units can serve as an efficient and eco-friendly alternative. For eco-conscious homeowners, the ADU provides a sustainable living option that aligns with their values, significantly reducing their dependence on non-renewable energy sources.

Technology and Innovation

As mentioned before, what truly sets Cosmic’s ADU apart is the advanced construction system and intelligent technologies employed in its development. Initially conceived in Jokic’s Formdwell venture, the streamlined process ensures precision and efficiency in the building process. Ultimately, it is quicker and less wasteful while also being less expensive. The ADU also has energy storage systems that optimize energy generation and consumption. Each ADU has a 40kWh battery, making it one massive storage device.

Additional Features

What accessory dwelling unit would be complete without a kitchenette and ample storage?

The kitchen has an induction cooktop with a vented hood, a convection oven, a kitchen sink with garbage disposal, a fridge/freezer combination, and a dishwasher.

Moving on, the ADU will also have the all-important bathroom.

From the view above, it is replete with limestone tiles, top-of-the-line fixtures, and a water-saving shower. Each ADU owner will also have the option of upgrading to a gray water filtration system.

This renewable water generator, located on the back of the ADU, will have its water collection system. Owners can use the collected water for their essential off-grid living or garden landscaping needs, reducing their environmental impact and saving on water bills.

The ADU's interior design is sleek and modern, with clean lines and neutral colors that create a sense of spaciousness.

Jokic’s Vision

Sasha Jokic envisions Cosmic as more than just a company; he sees it as a movement toward a sustainable and innovative future. His extensive background in design and construction, coupled with his entrepreneurial spirit, has culminated in a project that addresses environmental and societal challenges. Jokic’s vision for Cosmic extends to creating a ripple effect in the housing market, encouraging adopting eco-friendly practices and technologies.

Conclusion and Call-to-Action

Cosmic’s solar-powered ADU is a testament to the power of innovation in addressing some of today’s most pressing issues. By combining advanced technology with sustainable practices, Cosmic is paving the way for a greener, more efficient future. This year alone, they have produced 100 Studio ADUs at the starting cost of $279,000. You can expect a delivery time of up to 7 months before receiving one of these remarkable units. The company aims to take the money from this first production run and invest it back into the business. The cash infusion will improve the manufacturing process to make it faster and more efficient while cranking out new and improved ADUs.

For one, I like having a separate dwelling or two that could potentially power the rest of my home and “toys.” When my next spare $279,000 comes into existence, I will consider the Studio ADU for my backyard.
